Every once in a while when crossing the border, the occupants of a vehicle are run through a computer. Customs do random checks like that every so often. DWI offenses more than ten years old are now pardoned. But a person with repeat offenses or a very serious criminal record can still be denied entry even if the offenses occured more than ten years ago. However, this provision should make life much easier for the vast majority of visitors who have a simple DWI in their distant past. In most instances, individuals are admissable in the first five years though they would have to pay a $200.00 (Canadian $) fee. Others have the option of applying for rehabilitated status after five years. The application form for a permanent rehabilitation can be obtained from a Canadian Consulate.
